City of Kannapolis Departments

The City of Kannapolis is organized into several different departments that specialize in distinct areas of expertise and help keep the City running smoothly. Each department is managed by a department head, all of whom report to the City Manager’s Office.

Following is an overview of each department’s primary areas of responsibility. For more information, visit the department’s page, or find the answers to many common requests on the Residential City Services or Business City Services pages.

City Manager

In addition to overseeing each department, the City Manager’s Office is responsible for driving the City’s economic development through community development, customer service, community outreach, marketing and other special projects.

Fire

The Fire Department plays a critical role in public safety for the City, responding to fires, medical emergency calls and other hazardous situations. The department also works to educate the public about safety issues and inspects businesses for proper fire safety and suppression equipment.

Police

The Police Department is charged with maintaining a low crime rate through law enforcement and educating the community about public safety and crime issues.

Planning & Zoning

The Planning and Zoning Department manages commercial and residential development in Kannapolis. The primary responsibilities of the department include reviewing site plans, developing land use plans and overseeing code enforcement.

Parks & Recreation

From the Summer Entertainment Series to the Rotary Express to multiple athletic fields, the Parks and Recreation Department provides an abundance of family-friendly activities, most of which are free.

Finance & Tax

In addition to helping ensure the fiscal health of the City, the Finance and Tax Department oversees the administration of business licenses and maintains a list of approved City vendors.

Public Works

The Public Works Department handles solid waste collection, street maintenance, street lights, and water and sewer connections. This department also manages the City’s water supply.

Human Resources

The Human Resources Department performs a variety of functions related to staffing for the City, including the administration of benefits, oversight of hiring and risk management.
